How To Unwind After A Long Day At School...

Updated: Apr 14, 2020

As teachers we get used to taking care of everyone else but ourselves. Here are a few tips and tricks that I have learned that help me to relax!

Take A Deep Breath!

“I have so much chaos in my life, it's become normal. You become used to it. You have to just relax, calm down, take a deep breath and try to see how you can make things work rather than complain about how they're wrong." -Tom Welling

After a long and stressful day at work/school, it is super easy to be hard on yourself. What your feeling is understandable and valid. However, know that tomorrow is a new day, our jobs are not easy, and that's why not everyone can handle it. I myself can easily get in my own head and overthink everything. But in those moments I stop and take a deep breath and know that everything will work out how it should!

Exercise Your Mind & Body!

I know it may not be everyone's favorite thing, but after a long day nothing helps me unwind more then exercising both my mind and body! Yes, it is important to do both! Whether it's going to the gym, going a walk, reading a book, doing yoga, dancing, listening to music, meditation, there are so many ways to help de-stress!

Do Something For You!

“Treat yo self!" -Tom Haverford and Donna Meagle (Parks and Rec)

Okay, so maybe this isn't something you want to do ALL the time, but as they say..."everything in moderation!" Personally, when I have had a hard day at work I let myself get my favorite take-out, ice cream/froyo, maybe do some online shopping, do a face mask, get my nails done, watch my favorite TV show or movie, read a good book, etc. Whatever works for you! I also know this might be hard, but try your best to leave all your stressors at school. Let your home be a safe space for YOU!

Remember Your "WHY"

When times get rough it can be hard to remember why you are doing what you are doing. On days such as this, I try and think back to why I am teaching, For me it was always because I loved working with people, and having the ability to shape the next generation into kind and good people. In my life I have been very lucky to have plenty of amazing teachers that inspired me! Give them a call, send them a text, email them if you can. Thank them for all that they did, because I am sure they had many of hard days too!
