Yes, you read that right! Here is how getting involved at my school changed my life, and my day into something out of High School Musical!
Okay, is this me being a little dramatic? Sure...yes, maybe it's the theatre kid in me, but it is true! One of the biggest reasons as to why I wanted to be a teacher is because of the mentors, directors, and teachers I met through theatre. It truly made me the person and teacher I am today, and I wanted to share that passion with these students.
“You must remember young thespians, learning is never seasonal.” -Mrs. Darbus (High School Musical 2)
For those who don't know, Mrs. Darbus is the drama and homeroom teacher/ drama club advisor in the High School Musical movies. She is bold, eccentric, compassionate, driven, and so much more. She inspires the students to "break free," of the stereotypical norms and believe in themselves.
What Does This Have To Do With You?
When I was in my job interview, I had in my resume that I had experience in theatre. Partially to make me look good, but also because I have always wanted to be drama teacher. For people who also participated in the arts (choir, theatre, band, etc.) they will understand what I mean. The skills you learn and the community/family that you gain is something that is so special and I wanted to give that students. I had no idea that my employer would offer me the position of being the new drama club advisor (as the previous woman had just retired), but I will forever grateful that he did.
All of this is to say that if you are wanting to get involved in your school, you should. Start a club, become an advisor, coach a team, help out! Not only will it be a way for you to connect even more with students, but you can be creative! Express your passion and grow as a person and teacher. Becoming the Mrs. Darbus-esque drama teacher has given me so much joy, and I can only hope you find that too!
